I will review several theoretical results recently obtained by our group dealing with cold atoms in optical lattices. I will start out considering collective effectsin the photon emission of cold atoms, as well as atom optical extensions of those ideas. Then, I will mention how one can use the optical density of the system to perform quantum gates between photons, or to create entangled states. Finally, I willshow how one can manipulate and observe certain anyonic behavior with cold atoms.
