The talk discusses recent quantum gas and cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments towards a fully deterministic control of single atomic, molecular and photonic quanta. These include the controlled coupling of atom pairs and molecules in an optical lattice [Syassen et al., PRL 99, 033201 (2007)], the fermionization of a one-dimensional gas of bosonic molecules by means of dissipation, and the observation of an optical nonlinearity with just one atom in a high-finesse cavity.
